Legion History

The American Legion was founded in March 1919 in Paris, France, by a group of American World War I Veterans. Its creation was driven by a desire to support the welfare of returning servicemembers and to preserve the bonds of military service. The organization was formally chartered by the U.S. Congress on September 16, 1919, as a patriotic Veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.

Mission

"To enhance the well-being of America's veterans, their families, our military, and our communities by our devotion to mutual helpfulness."

Throughout its history, the American Legion has played a vital role in shaping U.S. veterans policy and promoting civic values. Key contributions include:

  • The GI Bill (1944): The Legion helped draft and advocate for the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, which provided education, housing, and employment benefits to returning World War II veterans.

  • Veterans Affairs: The organization has been a consistent advocate for improved healthcare, benefits, and services through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

  • Community Programs: The Legion sponsors youth and civic programs such as American Legion Baseball, Boys State/Boys Nation, and Oratorical Contests to foster leadership and patriotism.

  • National Defense Advocacy: The Legion supports a strong national defense and responsible U.S. military policy.

Today, as an arm of the American Legion, Chinatown Post 628 continues to echo the original mission statement by taking care of our Veteran brothers and sisters, their families and the communities they call home. We have accomplished this through efforts like:

  • Providing for disaster relief aide to victims of the Maui, Hawai'i, Alta Dean, California and Pacific Palisades, California fires.

  • Restoration and revitalization of the Chinese Cemetery in East Los Angeles, California every Memorial Day

  • Supporting youth in Boys and Girls State in the Greater Los Angeles area

  • Creating a scholarship for our JROTC family who in turn perform Color Guard details

With almost a century of service, the American Legion Chinatown Post 628 continues to be a cornerstone of support for Veterans of a diverse culture and a champion of American values.
